For almost 130 years, the National Geographic Society has funded groundbreaking scientists and explorers and shared their findings with the world. It sponsored Hiram Bingham as he brought back stories of Machu Picchu, documented Robert Ballard’s quest to find the Titanic, and supported Jane Goodall’s study of chimpanzees.
To date, it has given out more than 12,000 grants to work that is making a real difference in the world—projects like the Big Cat’s Initiative, which is working to stop the decline in populations of big cats in the wild; and the Pristine Seas project, which has helped protect 3 million square kilometers of the ocean’s last wild places.
And with our planet’s future at stake, the Society is focused on the guardians of that future: our children. Its education programs give teachers the tools they need to engage kids of all ages, revealing our interconnected world, and inspiring new generations of citizens and explorers.
AN EXPANDED PARTNERSHIP:
March 20, 2019, marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our enterprise, as National Geographic Partners is now a joint venture between the National Geographic Society and Disney.
The unique structure of the joint venture agreement was paradigm shifting when it was announced in 2015 and in the years since, has set National Geographic on a sustained growth trajectory. We tell stories that nobody else can and have the resources to fund the foremost changemakers in science, exploration, education, and storytelling, all made possible through the virtuous cycle between NGS and NGP.
Through our new partnership with Disney, we will have an even larger platform to continue to produce the bold, distinctive, premium storytelling for which National Geographic Partners is known. Disney’s legacy of innovation, inspiration, and conservation aligns with the Society’s mission to use the power of science, exploration, education, and storytelling to illuminate the wonder of the world, define critical challenges, and catalyze action to protect our planet.
Is the National Geographic Society still a nonprofit organization?
Yes, the National Geographic Society remains an independent nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) scientific and educational organization dedicated to exploring our planet, protecting wildlife and habitats, and helping assure that students in K-12 are geographically literate.
The discoveries and scientific breakthroughs from this important work are shared with a large global audience through magazines, channels and other media managed by National Geographic Partners—helping make even more of an impact.
How do proceeds from my purchases benefit this important nonprofit work?
A portion of all funds received by National Geographic Partners is distributed to the National Geographic Society and helps support its work in conservation, exploration, scientific research, and education.
